
Connections Series continues with Vietnam War Commemoration Event
As part of the College of Southern Marylands Fall Connections Series and its year-long commemoration of the anniversary of the Vietnam War, author Andrew Lam will discuss and read from his works Birds of Paradise Lost and Perfume Dreams, beginning at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 15, at the Leonardtown Campus, Building A, Auditorium.
Lam was born in South Vietnam and came to the United States as a refugee in 1975 after the fall of Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War. He attended the University of California, Berkeley where he majored in biochemistry. Choosing an alternate path, Lam enrolled in a creating writing program at San Francisco State University following completion of his undergraduate degree. In 1993, he won the Outstanding Young Journalist Award from the Society of Professional Journalists based on his work for the Pacific News Service.
Lams Perfume Dreams: Reflections on the Vietnamese Diaspora won the 2006 PEN Open Book Award. Lam is an editor and cofounder of New American Media, an association of more than 2,000 ethnic media outlets in America. He was a regular commentator on NPRs All Things Considered for many years and was the subject of a 2004 PBS documentary called My Journey Home. His essays have appeared in newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times, The LA Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Baltimore Sun, The Atlanta Journal, the Chicago Tribune, Mother Jones and The Nation, among many others.
Lams short stories have been widely taught and anthologized. Birds of Paradise Lost is his first story collection. He lives in San Francisco.
The Connections Series features award-winning contemporary writers, poets and artists who share their work with Southern Maryland residents.
