CSM Hosts Saxophonist, Composer Kurtis Adams

Second Ward Virts Concert of the 2013-14 Season, Nov. 10

The College of Southern Maryland continues the 2013-14 Ward Virts Concert series in its newest facility with award-winning jazz composer and saxophonist, Kurtis Adams at 3 p.m., Nov. 10 in the Multipurpose Room, Building B at the Prince Frederick Campus, 115 J. W. Williams Road, Prince Frederick.

Adams found his passion for music at an early age while raiding his parents’ eclectic music collection. As a member of the jazz scenes in Denver, Atlanta and points in between, he has shared the stage with great musicians including Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Joe Lovano, Conrad Herwig, Bob Mintzer, Tom Harrell, Greg Gisbert, Pat Bianchi, Brad Goode, John Gunther and Chip Stephens.

His compositions have received high praise including an award for Best Original Composition from Downbeat Magazine. He can be heard on Seabreeze Records as a member of the Mike Pagan Big Band as well as on various small group recordings including his first release as a leader, “Two Weeks from Tuesday,” and newest release, “Collage.”

As an educator, Adams has served on the faculties of Gordon College and Boise State University. He is currently director of Jazz Studies at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV.

“We are thrilled that Dr. Adams has agreed to take the traditional jazz spot in the Ward Virts Concert series,” said CSM Music Director Stephen Johnson. “He will be bring a combo with him that should provide some exciting ‘grooves’ to the new multimedia space on the Prince Frederick Campus.”

The Ward Virts Concert series is sponsored by Dr. and Mrs. Henry Virts, Edward and Patricia Mehosky and CSM. The centerpiece of the concert series is a world-class Boesendorfer Grand Piano which was donated to CSM by the Ward Virts Piano Project (WVPP) for the enjoyment of the Southern Maryland community.

 The remaining schedule for the 2013-14 Ward Virts series is Adams , Nov. 10; Timothy Hudson (trumpet), Feb. 16, 2014; Laura Armstrong(clarinet), March 9, 2014; Bernard Vallandingham (violin), April 6, 2014; Michael K. Santana (baritone), May 4, 2014. Admission is free and seating is open but limited.
