CSM Faculty Perform Works of Beethoven, Others

Professors, Staff Joined by Community Musicians for Bi-annual Tradition, Oct. 29

The College of Southern Maryland’s faculty and staff join with community musicians to present the bi-annual Faculty Music Showcase at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 29 at the Fine Arts Center on the La Plata Campus, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata.

The bulk of the program will consist of the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. “Musicians nearly universally consider him one of the giants in the field of musical composition,” said CSM Music Coordinator Dr. Stephen Johnson. While in his prime, Beethoven (1770-1827) stands at the turn of the 19th century, and thus his music is a link between the classical tradition of the 1700s and the new romanticism of the 1800s. Both traditions will be reflected in the faculty showcase program through the music of Wolfgang Mozart and Johannes Brahms.

Faculty members taking part in the concert are Lori Dean on piano, Takako Mato on clarinet, Adina Vallandingham on violin, Mary Wolf on piano, Keith Wright on flute and Antony Zwerdling on tenor saxophone. Johnson will play piano.

Community musicians joining the faculty for this performance include organist and choirmaster of Christ Church in La Plata, Angela Garvey on piano, joined by former Air Force Band violinist Alexander Dean and former cellist in the U.S. Air Force Band’s Covington String Quartet C. Frank McKinster.

Tickets cost $5 in advance, $7 on the day of the performance. A Fall Ensemble Combo ticket may be purchased for $20 for admittance to six concert events in the Fine Arts Center on the La Plata Campus.
