Katy Kindley, 11, who will attend Leonardtown Middle School in September, practices swaddling an infant manikin at the week-long Safe Sitter summer camp at the College of Southern Maryland's Leonardtown Campus.
The class was led by Lisa Carlson, a health educator at Calvert Memorial Hospital, and included instruction on how to handle emergencies, nurturing child care techniques and behavior management as well as the latest CPR techniques for children and infants.
“The camp provides hands-on training for children interested in babysitting or helping with younger siblings. It's important for a babysitter to have a good understanding of all the things that can happen with young children before they have their first job,” said Carlson. This is the first year Calvert Memorial Hospital and CSM have joined to offer the Safe Sitter summer camp at all three CSM campuses.
