CSM Spring Teams Vie For Chance at Nationals

Softball, Golf Teams Head down the Final Stretch with Gusto

               College of Southern Maryland spring athletic teams are gearing up for National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) regional championships and a chance at nationals.

The Lady Hawks softball team, with a 19-7 regular season record and led by Head Coach Mike Gardner, made the Region XX Tournament and will begin play May 3 at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, Md. “We are the fourth seed and play the fifth-seeded Hagerstown Hawks at noon,” said CSM Athletics Coordinator Nick Williams. The winner of the CSM and Chesapeake College game will play Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville at 4 p.m., May 3. The winner of the tournament will go on to the NJCAA Division II Softball National Championship May 15-18 in Clinton, Mississippi.

Since the softball program began at CSM in 1979, the Lady Hawks have six NJCAA tournament appearances. They are seven-time Region XX champions and eight-time Maryland Junior College (MDJUCO) champions.

The Hawks golf team, led by Head Coach Ned Spearbeck, earned a spot in the Region XX Tournament and will begin play May 3 at Pittsburgh National Golf Course in Pittsburgh. “We have a chance to qualify for the National Tournament being held at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Alabama,” said Williams.

The golf program produced a national champion, Roger Welch, in 2002 and has 12 individual NJCAA tournament appearances. They are two-time Region XX champions and five-time MDJUCO champions.
