CSM Spring Commencement, May 16
The College of Southern Maryland will celebrate its 54th spring commencement at the La Plata Campus on May 16 with the keynote address to be provided by Calvert County Circuit Court Associate Judge Gregory Wells.
Wells was appointed to the 7th Judicial Circuit by Gov. Martin OMalley in November 2012.
Wells served with distinction on the District Court of Maryland for District Four (Calvert, Charles and St. Marys counties) since 2008. Prior to his first judicial appointment, he served as an assistant attorney general in the Criminal Appeals Division of the Attorney Generals Office and as states attorney for Calvert County, the first African American to serve in that position. Earlier in his career, he served as the domestic relations master in Calvert County, as a deputy states attorney for Calvert County and in various positions with the States Attorneys Office for Prince Georges County.
Born in Washington, D.C., Wells attended Gonzaga College High School. He earned a bachelors degree in government at the College of William and Mary, and a J.D. from University of Virginia School of Law. He worked as an associate for OMalley, Miles, McCarthy & Harrell and McCarthy, Bacon, Costello & Stephens.
Wells is a member of CSMs Advisory Board and an adjunct faculty member. He previously served on the board of directors for the Calvert County Literacy Council, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Maryland, the Calvert Marine Museum (CMM) and the Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse.
He is recipient of the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Calvert Literacy Council, the Outstanding Service Award from CMM and the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Calvert County Chapter of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People).
I am honored to be the keynote speaker at the college's 54th Spring Commencement exercises, said Wells. Having taught at the college for several years, it has been my experience that the graduates are well prepared to enter the job market or continue with their academic careers. It will be pleasure to see and address this year's graduates as they embark on the next phase of their lives.
