Colleges Athletic Department, Students Recognized by Maryland Conference
The Maryland Junior College (MDJUCO) Conference awarded the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) the Dr. Jack Cistriano Sportsmanship of the Year Award for 2012-13 at its annual spring meeting May 20.
MDJUCO is comprised of 16 Maryland community colleges; with conference members voting for the college they feel most exemplifies the behaviors represented by this award. CSM was previously awarded the Sportsmanship of the Year Award in 2009.
“We are proud of the conduct of our students not only during competition but also in their everyday lives. This award speaks to the character of the young men and women of CSM who participate in sports while managing a full load of college classes. It also speaks to the coaches who teach and model sportsmanlike behavior. This honor is very special and we are honored the conference chose us for the second time,” said Director of Student Life and Athletics Michelle Ruble.
During the 2012-13 academic year, 109 student athletes participated on the colleges baseball, softball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball and golf teams. Additional opportunities for Southern Maryland student-athletes to compete on a collegiate level in mens lacrosse and womens cross country will begin in the 2013-14 academic year with cross country in the fall and lacrosse in the spring. Mens Head Lacrosse Coach Justin W. Ryan and Womens Head Cross Country Coach Christopher Tuttle are currently recruiting athletes for these teams.
