A collection of the late abstract artist, Gladys Goldstein, from the University of Maryland University College (UMUC), is currently on display in the College of Southern Maryland's Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery located in the Fine Arts Center on the La Plata Campus through Dec. 21. Brian Young, curator for the UMUC gallery, presented GoldsteinÂ’s work to the audience during a gallery talk on Nov. 15. Goldstein began her career at John Hopkins University where she studied education. She went on to study at Pennsylvania State University and it was there that she was encouraged by a professor to follow a career path as an artist. Goldstein taught art at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), the Baltimore Jewish Community Center and Notre Dame University. Throughout the course of her work, Goldstein has stayed true to her allegiance as an abstract artist. She worked with collage forms, in staining and dripping techniques and incorporated metallics in her work. She is best known for her spiral, circular paintings incorporating lavenders and silvers. Goldstein focused on creating and teaching art and was not as interested in the financial gain through the sale of her pieces. Her art was greatly influenced by internal emotions and nature. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday. For information visit http://www.csmd.edu/Arts.
