CSM’s Hungerford Gallery Show Melts Wintertime Blues

“Snowbound,” a watercolor presented by artist Karen Ceolla Tylec at the College of Southern Maryland’s Tony Hungerford Memorial Gallery, teases art patrons with glimpses of hope for springtime by revealing blades of grass and other greenery poking through a snowy scene. “I wanted people to view the piece and wonder, ‘What is beneath there?’ ‘What is concealed?’” Tylec said.

Tylec’s gallery show could not have come at a better time for residents of Southern Maryland overwhelmed by snow this winter. Her show offers not only snowy scenes, but also uplifting scenes of vibrant flowers and green foliage in “Spring Symphony,” “Awakening” and “Greenwood” to remind people of the glorious springtime that is waiting just beneath the multiple inches–and sometimes feet–of snow.

The show, “Watercolor Directions: The Art of Karen Ceolla Tylec,” runs through Feb. 21.

Tylec who teaches at Anne Arundel Community College says that watercolor is a “small and underrated medium.” Many of the major art exhibits are oils, according to Tylec, “So, people are curious about watercolor.” Her paintings are done on fabric not paper using a variety of techniques and media.

Rebecca and Amanda Schmeltz, of Waldorf, both students at CSM, attended Tylec’s Gallery Talk on Feb. 2. “I didn’t know watercolor looked like that,” said Rebecca Schemeltz a photography and graphic art major. Sister Amanda, who hopes to be a middle school art teacher, said that she enjoyed hearing the artist’s process of working with watercolors. “It made me want to take her class.”

Tylec’s show continues through Feb. 21 at the Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery located in the Fine Arts Center on the college’s La Plata Campus, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata.
