Trumpeter to Conduct Clinic, Perform with CSMs Solid Brass
High school jazz bands will get a chance to show off their chops when they kick off the College of Southern Maryland's Fourth Annual Jazz Festival at 10 a.m., May 4, at the La Plata Campus Fine Arts Center. That evening will feature the Berklee College of Music Jazz Combo, featuring special guest Randy Runyon Jr. The festival will continue May 5 with jazz artist Randy Brecker, a Grammy Award-winning trumpeter with the Brecker Brothers, conducting a free improvisation clinic in the afternoon and a concert that evening by Solid Brass, with Brecker on trumpet, and composer Alan Baylock as special guest conductor.
“This year we've got a triple-header Saturday night with Grammy Winner Randy Brecker, Composer/Arranger Alan Baylock and Guitarist Randy Runyon Jr. joining our big band in concert. This will be a great night of jazz with something for everyone,””said Randy Runyon, CSM music instructor and director of Solid Brass. “If you love jazz, this is a must-see event, he added.
Brecker has been shaping the sound of jazz, R&B and rock for more than three decades. His trumpet and flugelhorn performances have graced hundreds of albums by a wide range of artists from James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Chaka Khan, George Benson and Parliament-Funkadelics to Frank Sinatra, Steely Dan, David Sanborn, Horace Silver, Jaco Pastorius and Frank Zappa.
The Friday, May 4 performance will begin at 8 p.m. in Room FA-143, with tickets $5 general admission. The May 5 concert will begin at 8 p.m., in the Fine Arts Center Theater with tickets $10 general admission.
