The College of Southern Maryland will install its fourth president, Dr. Bradley Gottfried, in a ceremony with full academic regalia, Friday, May 4 at 1 p.m. on the La Plata Campus, Front Lawn. The installation will be followed by a presidential address and a reception to follow in the Inner Campus Courtyard.
The public is invited and encouraged to join students, staff and faculty at the ceremony, which will include remarks by Board of Trustees members, elected officials and the Student Association president. In the event of rain, the inaugural ceremony will be held in the Physical Education (PE) Center.
Gottfried will be honored at additional inaugural festivities at each campus. Activities are open to the community and include:
May 2, 1-3 p.m.: Inaugural Symposium: A Southern Maryland Perspective on the Civil War, Leonardtown Campus, Auditorium. Recognizing Gottfried's interest in Civil War history and his authoring of five books on the subject, the symposium will feature author and genealogist Agnes Kane Callum, who will share the history of the 7th and 9th Regiments United States Colored Troops. Her story chronicles the more than 6,000 black men who trained at Bryantown and participated in major Civil War campaigns including Petersburg, Richmond and Appomattox Courthouse. The program is free.
May 5, 6 p.m.: Inaugural Cocktail Reception and Jazz Concert, beginning at 6 p.m. followed by CSM's Jazz Concert at 8 p.m., CSM Fine Arts Center, La Plata Campus. The concert features Grammy Award winning trumpeter and composer Randy Brecker, with guest director Alan Baylock on stage with CSM's Big Band Jazz Ensemble, Solid Brass. Tickets are $25 and include the reception and concert, with a portion of the proceeds to fund CSM scholarships.
May 6, 2 p.m.: Inaugural Toast followed by Ward Virts Master Concert Series, featuring the CSM Choir at 3 p.m., Prince Frederick Campus. Part of the choir's regional tour in celebration of its 10th year, the program includes works selected by the singers from past concert seasons including an eight-part choral of Mendelssohn and 14-part works of Eric Whitacre. Various American folk songs and spirituals will also be included. The event is free, but seats are limited and a ticket is required.
Appointed CSM's president in July, 2006, Gottfried has been associated with community colleges for more than 30 years and has extensive experience in strategic planning, enrollment management, fiscal and facilities management, and cultivating community and legislative relations, as well as developing successful initiatives in curriculum, technology, faculty, transfer programs and business development.
