CSMs Youngest Students Raise Funds and Learn Cycle Safety Tips
The students at the College of Southern Marylands St. Charles Childrens Learning Center (CLC) participated in a Trike-A-Thon fundraiser to benefit the St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. The students raised more than $200 as well as learned bicycle riding safety tips.
For the Trike-A-Thon the students rode their bicycles, tricycles and other wheeled toys through an obstacle course set up in the parking lot of the CLC with the 2- and 3- year-olds going through the course first, followed by the 4- and 5- year-olds. Lynn Duff, director of CLC, said The funds raised by the children will cover the cost of two X-rays for a little one that is not so fortunate.
During the Trike-A-Thon the children received support from the Charles County Sherriffs Office. Pfc. Lewis Payne, Cpl. Robert Kuhnow and Cpl. Lee Potter helped the children put on their safety helmets correctly, assisted younger children with their bikes, provided helmets for students who did not have helmets and using eggs demonstrated how safety helmets protect the brain from injuries.
The Trike-A-Thon culminated a week of instruction and activities dedicated toward bicycle safety. During the week, the students painted boxes used for the obstacle course, to represent the town of La Plata.
