CSM Students Submit Work for Annual Juried Show
With 70 submissions for the College of Southern Maryland Annual Student Juried Art Show, the Tony Hungerford Memorial Gallery is filled with a variety of pieces reflecting the artistic efforts of CSM's students. Submissions included everything from oil paintings and photographs to ceramics, with six students recognized for their winning selections.
Nicole Stewart of Hughesville received first place for her oil painting “Francis Street, Annapolis,” which was a realistic recreation of the historic city. Angie Wathen of Colton's Point received second place for her untitled piece of photography, and Jacquelyn “Sunny” Paul of La Plata received third place for her stoneware piece “Day dream.”
Three pieces received honorable mention. Those honored were Jerry Reynolds of La Plata for a pencil work “Generator;” Tonie Shircliffe of Mechanicsville for an untitled collage; and Michael Sharp of Lusby for his paper clay sculpture titled, “Torment.”
During a gallery talk, students spoke about the inspiration for their work. Stewart explained that while this was her first time entering the show, she had completed the works during her first year of courses. “Some oil paintings can take anywhere from six months to a year to dry depending on the thickness,” she said. In discussing her painting, Stewart said she “decided to go big with this painting,” saying she wanted to come out of her shell and do something different.
Paul told the audience that she feared size would be a factor and was at first angry at herself for entering a smaller sculpture rather than a larger piece. She had thought that “due to its size it had no chance next to the larger works.”
Sharp explained that he “could not think of a name for the piece, and it became a ‘Torment',” “hence the name. He added that the sculpture is a match to another piece entitled “Anguish.”
The annual Student Juried Show continues at the Tony Hungerford Memorial Gallery located in the Fine Arts Center of the La Plata Campus through May 27. The gallery is open during Box Office hours, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, noon to 5 p.m. and one hour before shows.
