College Community Showcases #CSMLove through Appreciation, Respect

The College of Southern Maryland aims to spread a message of love, appreciation and respect throughout Southern Maryland with a campaign of #CSMLove during February. Throughout a month traditionally focused on friendship and affection as part of Valentine’s Day, CSM is highlighting 28 days of kindness and goodwill with its students, employees and the community.

“CSM is devoted to creating and celebrating a diverse, civil and supportive community, putting action to the old adage that there is far more that unites us than divides us. CSM Love is one example of how the college embodies these values by expressing thankfulness and gratitude to those who work within and in support of the CSM community. In its second year, CSM Love is a new tradition as we show our gratitude to those who are working to build a vibrant and passionate college community. This heart-felt campaign is for them” said CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried.

The campaign focuses on different aspects of the college, from athletics to the arts, and from students to those who support students. Fans sported their CSM Love in the stands during the men’s and women’s basketball home games Feb. 4, demonstrating appreciation for student athletes, their coaches and families, as well as celebrating a college environment that embraces competition, character, sportsmanship and academic achievement.

Theater audiences will be encouraged to sign an over-sized greeting card in appreciation for 30 years of the arts during a variety of performances at each campus, while others will be sharing #CSMLove sentiments on a banner traveling to all campuses or via “Sending CSM Love Your Way” notes for faculty and staff.

Additionally, #CSMLove is about helping those in need and there are several opportunities to do so including a canned food drive, student fund drive and online giving day.

“Throughout this month of spreading CSM Love, we particularly want to let our community know just how much we appreciate their support. Our donors are our neighbors, many of whom have seen first-hand the impact of the college in their own lives. They are business owners who firmly believe in the mission of the college and its necessity in the community. We can’t thank these wonderful friends and supporters enough for the love they show CSM,” said Vice President of Advancement Michelle Goodwin.

To participate with CSM’s Student Association on its canned food drive to provide assistance within the community, items may be dropped at the following locations on the La Plata Campus: AD Building (in front of the Advising Office), LR Building (In the front of the Library entrance), ST Building (in the Atrium) and CC Building (next to the Student Life Office). Items can be dropped in the following locations on the Leonardtown Campus: Building B (in the Student Lounge) and Building C (in the Student Lounge). Items can be dropped off at the Prince Frederick Campus in the lobby of Building B. All Items will be donated to the Southern Maryland Food Bank.

During the month, the College Stores are collecting “Dollars for Scholars” to benefit the Student Government’s “Students Helping Students” fund. Donations of $10 or more at check-out will receive a thank you gift while supplies last. CSM libraries and fitness centers are offering complimentary CSM Love wristbands and stickers.

The generosity of community partners, faculty and staff provides much-needed support for scholarships, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programs, the arts and more. To support CSM, a 24-hour online giving day on Feb. 26 gives donors the opportunity to win CSM-related prizes. For information, visit www.csmd.edu/Foundation.
