Maryland Gov. Martin J. O’Malley has appointed Samuel C. Jones of Calvert County to the College of Southern Maryland Board of Trustees. A resident of Dunkirk, Jones is the division chief of Economic Programming with the U.S. Census Bureau. In addition to his distinguished career service of 33 years with the Census Bureau, he is active within his community and in developing youth leaders.

“My day job is in information technology, but I am passionate about education,” Jones said. “I have always wanted to be more involved and supportive of students and their educational pursuits. The CSM Board of Trustees clearly is a very strong team and I look forward to adding value to the team and supporting the college.”

Jones joined the Census Bureau in 1979 as a survey statistician on the Decennial Process staff and worked on the 1980 Decennial Census. He later worked within the Industry Division and the Foreign Trade Division, working on data systems and the division’s IT operations and services. He considers his most valued experiences, particularly in data capture, analysis and dissemination, as his involvement with data users and providers. While working at the Census Bureau, he has received numerous awards and citations, including awards for innovation.

Within his local community, Jones established and administered a tutoring program at Patuxent United Methodist Church, in Huntingtown. He provides leadership and guidance to minority college students through summer internship programs at the Census Bureau and he is active with the Black Executive Exchange Program at Bowie State University to help college students understand the importance of education, the expectations of the work world and how students can best prepare for careers.

Jones has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s of education in college counseling from the University of Delaware.

CSM’s Board of Trustees is the governing body providing leadership and oversight of the college’s mission and policies. Members are appointed by the governor for five-year terms, with equal representation from each of Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties.

In addition to Jones, CSM’s trustees are Mary Maddox Krug and Julie Sickle of Calvert County; Lois DiNatale, Michael Middleton and Dorothea Holt Smith of Charles County; and Ted Harwood, Dr. John Roache and Dr. Janice T. Walthour of St. Mary’s County. Serving as secretary/treasurer to the board is CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried.

CSM is a regional community college serving more than 27,600 credit and continuing education students at campuses in Leonardtown, La Plata and Prince Frederick, the Waldorf Center for Higher Education, the Center for Trades and Energy Training (CTET) in Waldorf and the Center for Transportation Training in La Plata. Approval for a fourth campus in Hughesville to centrally locate specialized, high-cost programs has been granted, with construction to relocate the CTET anticipated to begin in 2014.

With its tuition and fees about half the cost of that of a state four-year public university, CSM offers a range of associate’s degree programs, certificate programs, letters of recognition and continuing education courses for professional and career development. CSM students successfully transferred to 110 different bachelor-degree colleges and universities in 31 states and the District of Columbia last year. CSM is a leader in the state for its high-quality online learning methods and enrollments.
