
The Southern Maryland Civil War Roundtable (SMCWR) will host a presentation on Generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant by noted Civil War author, speaker, editor and teacher Edward Bonekemper. The presentation will be at 7 p.m., May 12 at the College of Southern Marylands Center for Business and Industry (BI), Chaney Enterprises Conference Room BI-113, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata.
Bonekemper has lectured, written and taught on the Civil War for more than 20 years. His works include How Robert E. Lee Lost the Civil War, A Victor, Not a Butcher: Ulysses S. Grants Overlooked Military Genius and McClellan and Failure: A Study of Civil War Fear, Incompetence and Worse. His presentations have been with historical organizations as well as the Chautauqua Institution, the Smithsonian Institution and the Queen Delta Steamboat Company. He has written five books and has edited book reviews of more than 50 reviewers for Civil War News.
For more than 15 years, Bonekemper served as the assistant chief counsel for hazmat transportation safety at the U.S. Department of Transportation. While working there, he provided legal counsel and managed the legal office that promoted safety and emergency preparedness. Prior to that, he was a Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer for the U.S. Coast Guard where he promoted maritime safety, national security and environmental protection.
