Tobacco Culture in Southern Maryland; Origins, History and Demise. Saturdays, April 519, 10 a.m. – noon, Waldorf Higher Education Center, 3261 Old Washington Road, Waldorf. Just eight years ago, tobacco farming was strong in Southern Maryland. This course will cover statistics on the growth and importance of tobacco in the colonial era to the present, the use of modern technology and government intervention. A review of anti-tobacco legislation, the Maryland buyout of farmers, and the survival of burley tobacco among the Amish in Southern Maryland will conclude the course.
