Letter to the Editor: It Takes Community to Build a Plan for a Stronger Charles County

Letter to the Editor:

Ever noticed that in the word “community” is the word “unity”? Sure you have. And so have we at the Diversity Institute at the College of Southern Maryland. That is why we are excited to be again planning the annual “Unity in Our Community” forum, which brings together Charles County residents to discuss our community’s future.

This year’s event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 25 beginning with registration at 8:30 a.m. in CSM’s Center for Business and Industry, La Plata Campus at 8730 Mitchell Road. You are invited to register and come out to be a part of this year’s gathering with a focus on “Shaping a Stronger Charles County Together.”

It is our goal to leave this year’s forum with specific recommendations that will be the seeds of an action plan that will be coordinated by the Diversity Institute at CSM. If you have wanted to help make our community a strong one, this will be your perfect opportunity to be part of making that a reality.

The day will begin with check-in and registration followed by a panel discussion that will feature experts and community leaders discussing both challenges and opportunities facing Charles County in the wake of increasing growth in population and diversity. You will have a chance to ask them questions. But more than that, you will have a chance to participate in breakout sessions with other county residents to not only discuss issues of concerns but also to develop specific strategies for addressing those concerns.

We want to develop goals that can be measured. Our emphasis will be on moving beyond rhetoric to taking steps that will make positive differences in our communities throughout the county. We can be the change we want to see, and we believe we can do this together. If you share our belief, we invite you to register for this event by visiting http://www.csmd.edu/diversityinstitute/ or by calling 301-539-4742. And remember, there is no community without unity.

See you on April 25!
