Discover CSM at the Ballpark

CSM mascot “Hawk” stands for the playing of the National Anthem at April’s Southern Maryland Blue Crabs vs. CSM Hawks preseason exhibition game at Regency Furniture Stadium. “Hawk” will return to the stadium July 31 for Discover CSM at the Ballpark when music student Cynthia Kirscht of La Plata and nursing student Emily Powers of Waldorf will sing the National Anthem to start the game.

College to Sponsor Community Outreach Evening at Regency Furniture Stadium

From the time the gates open, to the first shout-out from the hot dog vendor, to the seventh-inning stretch, to the bottom of the ninth, Southern Maryland Blue Crab fans attending the team's July 31 game against the Lancaster Barnstormers can root for their team while scouting out academics and personal enrichment opportunities at the College of Southern Maryland during the college's “Discover CSM at the Ballpark.”

“CSM night at the ballpark is a great way for the college to reach out to the community and show what we offer,” said CSM Assistant Director of Admissions and Recruitment Nellie Pharr-Maletta. “We will have many CSM faces from all departments welcoming guests to the game—and we will have some surprises for the fans.”

CSM staff will be available on the concourse to answer questions on how to start and complete letter of recognition, certificate, associate and bachelor's degree programs in Southern Maryland as well as how to take advantage of continuing education and personal enrichment courses. Information on financial assistance, flexible learning options and credit for prior learning will be available. Enrollment advisors will be available to talk about dual and concurrent options for high school students, as well as options for homeschoolers or returning adult students.

CSM's mascot “Hawk” will accompany Blue Crabs mascot “Pinch” as they visit the suites, skyboxes and children’s area, and play games on the field between innings. CSM is sponsoring a fireworks show following the game.

CSM music student Cynthia Kirscht of La Plata and nursing student Emily Powers of Waldorf will sing the National Anthem to start the game. The duo has performed together to open CSM robotics competitions, at graduations and as part of the CSM choir in last September's 50th anniversary celebration at the stadium; this is their first duet performance at a ballpark.

“We are excited and maybe just a little nervous,” said Kirscht. “But we have been practicing and we feel pretty good.” The two met at CSM and have been singing together in the college choir for two years.

At the ballpark, Blue Crab fans will have an opportunity to find out about CSM's new Center for Trades and Energy Training, as well as CSM's new non-credit Career Starters training programs. The center, located at 17 Irongate Drive in the Industrial Park in Waldorf, will open in September offering 10- to 16-week training programs in construction.
