Students from Lena VanSickles fifth-grade class at J.P. Ryon Elementary in Waldorf were college-bound on March 30 as they toured the College of Southern Marylands science classrooms and stopped to watch a college-level robotics scrimmage in progress. The field trip is part of Destination College which brings fifth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students from Calvert, Charles and St. Marys counties to CSM campuses to introduce them to the world of a college student. Students learned about media literacy, the art of theater and what a nurse really does, and at the end of the day they received a certificate that grants them acceptance to CSM upon completion of all high school requirements, said CSM Tech Prep Coordinator Julie Andrews-Walker. The CSM Talons robotics team, named for the colleges hawk mascot, organized a competition with students from Alfred University in New York in advance of the world championship in Anaheim, Calif., April 19-21.
