Mitten Tree’ Collects More Than 100 Items for Needy Children

Students, faculty and staff of the College of Southern Maryland donated more than 100 hats, mittens, scarves and gloves of all colors and sizes to the Charles County Commission for Women’s (CCCW) ‘Mitten Tree’ Campaign in December. “We were so excited to see the tree decorated with colorful mittens, hats and scarves,” said CCCW Chair Elizabeth Benson, who is also adjunct professor of health services at CSM and organizer of the campaign. “The generosity took my breath away. The children will be thrilled.” Benson said while many holiday charitable activities focus on the “extras,” the children in our community also need the “basics.” The mittens as well as other cold-weather clothing items will be distributed to needy children in Charles County through Lifestyles of Maryland. Gathered around the tree are, from left, Benson, CCCW Vice Chair Carole King, CCCW Past Chair Christine Parker, CSM Academic Division Support Specialist Lindy Galbraith, Assistant to the Director of Lifestyles of Maryland Diane Warren, CSM Center for Civic Engagement and Service Learning Director Sarah Merranko and Lifestyles Support Services Director/Youth Services Coordinator Corae Briscoe-Young.
