Alexis Porterfield

Alexis Porterfield Named September 2016 Athlete of the Month

A College of Southern Maryland student-athlete has been selected by the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (Maryland JUCO) as one of its Student Athletes of the Month for September 2016.

A sophomore, Alexis Porterfield of Welcome scored eight goals and had six assists in six games (including Aug. 27 and 28) and helped propel CSM's women's soccer team to a 5-1 start. She opened the season with a three-goal, one-assist performance against Corning Community College and scored at least one point in each game during September.

“Alexis has a rare mix of talent, ability, and work ethic that you seldom find present in one player,” said Barry McGrellis, head coach for CSM's women's soccer. “Her contribution to the team in terms of goals and assists this year has almost never been a consequence of being in the right place at the right time but instead the result of her own hard work. She is a nightmare for defenders and never stops pressuring opponents on the field, forcing mistakes upon which her and her teammates have continually capitalized. I couldn't be more proud of her this season. She took the high pressure concept we tried to adopt as a team and embodied it as one player. She is an excellent example to the younger players of exactly where hard work can take you. Of course, it also helps that she could play every game blindfolded and still know where the goal is.”

Maryland JUCO governs and conducts championships for the conference's 16 varsity sports. Chartered in the late 1960s, the conference is composed of 16 Maryland community colleges that compete in a variety of varsity intercollegiate athletics. Maryland JUCO oversees and promotes programs dedicated to academic and athletic goals of its diverse institutions, while enhancing opportunities for balanced intercollegiate athletic programming. Each season, Maryland JUCO verifies the eligibility of all its student-athletes, schedules and statistics for statewide competition.

CSM's women's soccer team will play their final regular season home game Oct. 21 at 2:30 p.m. vs. Washington Adventist. They begin Region XX Semifinals at 4 p.m., Oct. 27 at CCBC-Dundalk.
