Completing this years spring Connections series for the College of Southern Marylands Connections literary magazine will be the publication reading, May 6.
Contributors to the spring literary magazine will read and discuss their work, beginning at 7:30 p.m., May 6, at the La Plata Campus, Business and Industry Building (BI), Room BI-103. The event is free.
Among the contributors are members of the community, CSM adjunct faculty members and students. Joyce Vincent, a CSM student in the media studies, journalism and speech communications program and an intern in the community relations department, will be featured on the front cover with her photo, House of Light. This is Vincents first entry into the magazine and when asked why she selected this photo for submission she said, I like the contrast of the dome and the base of the lighthouse. The shadow created by the angle of the sun helps to give the photo more depth. Free copies of the literary magazine are available at the reading.
CSMs Neal Dwyer, a literature and languages professor as well as a coordinator of the colleges Connections programs and literary magazine, views the colleges literary series as an opportunity to connect and inspire people who may not realize that they have an interest, or talent, in the arts. This is accomplished not only through the writers who are featured as guest speakers each semester but also through the colleges twice-yearly literary magazine that features the poetry, stories, artwork and photography of Southern Maryland residents.
Since it began in 1990, Connections has featured U.S. Poet Laureate Kay Ryan, National Book Award winners Tim O'Brien and Robert Stone, Pulitzer Prize winning poets Yusef Komunyakaa and Henry Taylor, and Maryland Poet Laureates Lucille Clifton and Michael Glaser.
The spring 2011 issue of Connections is dedicated to former faculty member, John Lamiman, who recently suffered a debilitating spinal cord injury which has left him paralyzed. To send a donation, visit http://www.itc.csmd.edu/lan/johnl/donations.htm.
