CSM’s Admissions Department Presents: 2nd Annual Black History Month Celebration: The African American Heritage of Southern Maryland. 6-8 p.m., Feb. 7, College of Southern Maryland, Prince Frederick Campus, Room 119, 115 J.W. Join us for the tri-county black history month celebration co-presented by The College of Southern Maryland, The Calvert County Historical Society, The Calvert County Minority Business Alliance, The Calvert County NAACP, The Concerned Black Women of Calvert County, The Charles County African American Heritage Society and The Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions of St. Mary’s County. Meet local historians, authors and genealogists and learn more about the heritage and contributions of African Americans to the tri-county. CSM Children’s Theatre Presents Allyson Currin’s “Unleashed! Lastair, the newly elected First Daughter, is thrilled about her upcoming four years in the White House until her jittery chihuahua Tipp convinces her that the pressure will be too much for either of them to bear. With the help of a wise White House usher and a time-traveling buggy, Alastair and Tipp go on the journey of a lifetime through history, in search of reassurance from some of the most colorful pets who ever lived in the White House. CSM Cause Theatre Presents Tim Kelly’s “The Empty Chair.” 8 p.m., Feb. 7-9, College of Southern Maryland, La Plata Campus, Fine Arts Center, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata. In a counseling center for teenagers recovering from substance abuse, one of the teenager’s peers, Robert, has just died of an overdose. Unsure of whether the incident is an accident or suicide, the atmosphere is tense and uneasy. Each young person recalls their memories of Robert and the dramatic monologues tell us a great deal about each speaker and the terrors of drug abuse. CSM Theatre Company Presents Celeste Raspanti’s “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.” 8 p.m., Feb. 14, 15, 16 and Feb. 21, 22, 23, College of Southern Maryland, La Plata Campus, Fine Arts Center, 8730 Mitchell Road. Produced by special arrangement with the Dramatic Publishing Company, “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” tells the true story of more than 15,000 Jewish children who passed through Terezin and the 100 who were still alive when Terezin was liberated at the end of the war. One of the survivors, Raja, taught the children when there was nothing to teach with, giving them hope when there was little reason for hope and creating a little world of laughter, flowers and butterflies behind the barbed wire.
