For the sixth year, the College of Southern Maryland is recognized by the Alliance for Workplace Excellence as an outstanding organization in providing an excellent workplace environment and for its dedication and commitment to employee work-life initiatives.
Recognizing 66 Washington, D.C. area organizations at its Workplace Excellence Annual Recognition Awards ceremony in June, the Alliance acknowledged CSM as a top employee-friendly organization, honoring it with the 2009 Workplace Excellence seal. The 2009 winning companies represent more than one million employees from small, medium and large, private, nonprofit and public sector organizations.
The College of Southern Maryland is proud to again receive this award. It indicates that we are continuing to strive to make CSM a great place to work. We are not content to rest on our laurels, as we are continuing to implement new state-of-the-art training, wellness, compensation and on-boarding programs for our employees, said CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried.
According to the Alliance for Workplace Excellence, these outstanding winning employers are committed to providing balanced leadership through inclusive and flexible corporate culture and management practices; family and employee friendly policies and programs; strong health and wellness practices and programs; growth and learning opportunities; and a commitment to corporate, social, and civic responsibility. Recipients are selected after a comprehensive evaluation process that is run by an independent review panel of doctorate professionals, doctoral candidates in business, industrial and organizational psychology, and human resources professionals and communications experts.
CSM, founded in 1958, is the fifth largest community college in Maryland. In its 50-year history, the college has grown to be the centerpiece of Southern Maryland, becoming an integral part of the community it serves with campuses in Calvert, Charles and St. Marys counties and more than 22,500 annual enrollments. From a first graduation class of four in 1960, the college has celebrated nearly 17,000 graduates.
The college has been recognized with two Silver Level Quality Excellence Awards through the Maryland Performance Excellence Award program, and as the 2007 Employer of the Year by the Maryland Department of Aging and the Maryland Chamber of Commerce Partner in Business.
The college has good opportunities for employees to grow and advance in their careers and personal lives, said Denise Bailey Clark, CSMs executive director for human resources. This year the college instituted an employee assistance program designed to help employees deal with various work-related or personal issues such as nutrition, exercise, disability management, safety and elder care. The program and consultants are available to employees 24 hours a day, seven days a week, free of charge.
CSM offers competitive benefits including telecommuting and flexible work schedules. A staunch supporter of employee growth and development, CSM offers employees a number of development opportunities including personal enrichment courses, tuition reimbursement for advanced degrees obtained at other colleges and universities and free tuition for classes attended at CSM campuses. Each campus offers free access to a fitness center. The La Plata Campus has an onsite daycare center.
