CSM, Leonardtown Celebrate 300 Years

Peter Himmelheber

Friday Night Lecture focuses on Town’s Early History

The College of Southern Maryland and the Leonardtown 300th Celebration Committee, in cooperation with the St. Mary’s County Public Libraries will present a lecture on the early history of the town as part of the CSM Friday Lecture series, beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 1.

The featured speaker will be Peter Himmelheber of the St. Mary’s County Historical Society. A longtime St. Mary’s County resident, Himmelheber volunteers at the historical society, serves as one of its board members, and is the past chair of the Historical Preservation Commission of St. Mary’s County. He also provides tours of St. Mary’s County with an emphasis on the county’s history and development.

“I think that this lecture series is a great opportunity for people to come out and learn some interesting history. There is so much history about this area that has not been told,” he said, adding, “Who owns the past? We all do and should at least be curious of it, and this lecture will give people an understanding of the problems our forefathers faced in the development of this government and nation.” Himmelheber’s lecture will focus on early Leonardtown between 1633 and 1740. It will include archival records, the various locations of the Leonardtown Courthouse and the quest of early residents to develop the area into a thriving community.

As Leonardtown celebrates 300 years this year, CSM’s lecture series is just one of an array of events, publications and displays that are planned for all ages. For information on activities, call 301-475-9791 or visit http://leonardtown.somd.com/300thanvy.htm.

This lecture is the second of a four-part series, with the first featuring Linda Reno, historian and author, who spoke about the Battle of Brooklyn and the patriots from Leonardtown. The next lecture will be Sept. 5 with the series concluding Oct. 3. The lectures are free and are held on the Leonardtown Campus beginning at 7 p.m. For information on the lectures call 301-934-7703 or 301-870-2309, Ext. 7703 for Charles County; 240-725-5499, Ext. 7703 for St. Mary’s County or 443-550-6169, Ext. 7703 for Calvert County or visit www.csmd.edu.
