Contest Open to Girls in Grades 8-12, Deadline March 7
The College of Southern Maryland is seeking submissions for the women + math essay contest, sponsored by the colleges mathematics, physics and engineering division.
To promote the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), the college is sponsoring the essay contest to encourage young women to enter these fields. The contest is open to females in Southern Maryland who are in grades eight through 12. Entries must be postmarked by March 7. Two winners will be awarded awards valued up to $250.
To compete in this years contest, participants are asked to interview a woman currently working in a STEM career field and write an original essay in narrative form about her and her career. The essay must be a minimum of 500 words, not to exceed 1,000 words.
The goal of the essay contest is get young girls to interact with professional women in the STEM fields, learn about the challenges and obstacles they faced and overcame and how to pursue careers in STEM related fields, said Sandra Poinsett, CSM professor of mathematics.
Essays must be typed, double-spaced and free of all grammatical and syntax errors with the authors name on each page. Submissions must also include the entry form which can be downloaded from www.csmd.edu/women&math/essay.
