Nancy Wickham, Amanda Long, Amy Reed Receive Awards

The College of Southern Maryland presented Nancy Wickham and Amanda Long, both students at the Prince Frederick Campus, with its highest student leadership awards at the annual Student Government Association awards banquet at the La Plata Campus, April 26. Also honored was Amy Reed as CSM's Student Employee of the Year.

The President's Cup is awarded to the college's outstanding student leader based on a demonstrated ability to motivate and lead others, active involvement in the college's extracurricular programs, and the giving of time and talent to better the college community.

“This year's recipient, Nancy Wickham, has set an example for others through her service to the college and the community,” said Bill Comey, dean of student and instructional support services. “She has participated in a variety of activities, held leadership positions, and volunteered her time whenever called upon. Nancy has been one of the most active student leaders in the history of the college.”

Wickham has been extensively involved in programs and activities on the Prince Frederick Campus. She has organized extracurricular and co-curricular programs sponsored by the Student Association, helped to coordinate and promote Diversity Office programs, assisted with Kids College, promoted the Future Teachers Club and participated in Campus Clean-up Day activities.

“Over the past two years, Nancy has focused much of her ideas and enthusiasm on growing the Prince Frederick Student Association. Her efforts have galvanized this group of students, so that now the organization has a core of intensely involvedofficers who have coordinated a wide range of activities at the Prince Frederick Campus,” Comey said.

The Dean's Cup is presented annually to the student who has most significantly contributed to improving the college community. Designed to recognize the important work done by students behind the scenes, the award is based on dedication, commitment and involvement.

“Amanda Long's dedication to the college is amazing,” said Comey as he presented the Dean's Cup. “In addition to planning and promoting student activities, she has also volunteered to work at the Prince Frederick Student Services Fair, and to help with SOAR orientation sessions, Kick-Off to College and the Cultural Competency Committee.”

Long has been a student employee in Student Life for more than a year and in the absence of a Student Activities Coordinator assumed a major role in working with the Student Association to ensure a robust student life program at the Prince Frederick Campus. As president of the Prince Frederick Student Association she helped to coordinate or promote several major projects including the Cultural Café, Fall Fiesta, Spring Fling, Campus Clean-Up Day and the Chili Cook-off.

Most recently Long was elected by her fellow Student Association presidents to serve as the college's Student Government Association president.

The CSM Student Employee of the Year recognizes a student for his or her initiative, contributions to the college community, and qualities of fairness and respect demonstrated in the student's role as an employee of the college.

“Amy Reed brings integrity, commitment and service to the student employee position, and models all the behaviors that the college needs in their student employees,” said Fitness Coordinator Cliff Long, who nominated Reed for the award. Reed has been a student assistant at the La Plata Campus, Wellness, Fitness and Sports department since June 2006, and was honored for her continuous achievement, exemplary professional growth, and development in her abilities as a student supervisor at the La Plata Fitness Center.

“She is involved with the March of Dimes organization and is dedicated towards helping children develop in safe and loving environments. This is the driving force that has pushed her to major in Elementary Education and pursue her goal of someday opening her own daycare facility,” added Cliff Long.
