Health Screenings, Fitness Assessments, Group Class to be Offered

The College of Southern Maryland’s Wellness, Fitness and Aquatics (WFA) will be presenting a health fair from 9 a.m. to noon and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 23 on the La Plata Campus, and noon to 3 p.m. on Oct. 29 on the Prince Frederick Campus. The health fairs are open to the public and are presented to promote National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“Both health fairs are part of an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease and to provide general health assessments,” said CSM Fitness Coordinator Jane Pomponio.

Information on warning signs and reducing the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases through nutrition and exercise will be available.

At the La Plata Campus health fair, CSM nursing students will provide free health screenings, such as checking blood pressure and body mass index. A free group fitness class, led by CSM personal trainers, will be offered throughout the day. A representative from the Charles County Health Department will provide information on cancer prevention and detection, HIV screenings and tobacco cessation information. A representative from Meals on Wheels will be available to answer questions on this nutrition program for county residents who are unable to provide proper meals for themselves.

The Prince Frederick Campus health fair will provide information from Calvert Memorial Hospital’s Breast Care Center as well as Calvert Health Department information on tobacco, safe sex, stress and depression. CSM Fitness Trainer Melvina Frazier will provide free fitness assessments as well as give guests a tour of the expanded fitness center and new equipment.

“We will also be kicking off the employee walking program at both fairs,” Pomponio said.
