Student Athlete in Tie for Ninth Place Following 2nd Round
Following the second round of competition in the 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II mens national golf tournament at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Ala., members of the College of Southern Maryland golf team remain competitive in a field of 127 players.
CSM sophomore Kyle Carranza, of Leonardtown, shot 74 for a total of 145 and is tied for ninth place.
Competition is just as strong as last year. The course is longer and the greens are tougher than last year and putting has been a challenge, said Carranza who competed for CSM in the nationals in 2010. I was at 2-under up to the 16th hole and then had three tough holes, he said, adding that he will try to make up points in the final two rounds.
Playing in the national championship last year was a huge help, said Carranza. I learned that you have to take one shot at a time for the length of the tournament. It is advice that he has passed on to the two CSM freshmen on the team. I told them to
savor the momentnot everyone gets to play in a national tournament.
Tyler Logan of La Plata shot 79 for a total of 155 and is tied for 73rd place and Walt Wiseman of Upper Marlboro, shot 83 for a total of 164 and is tied for 110th place following the second day of competition.
