CSM Golfer in 9th Place Heading into Final Round of National Championship

Student Athlete Kyle Carranza Four Shots out of Lead

Following the third round of competition in the 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II men’s national golf tournament at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Ala., College of Southern Maryland sophomore Kyle Carranza is in a tie for ninth place in a field of 127 players.

Carranza, of Leonardtown, shot his second under par round of the tournament on Thursday for a score of 71 bringing his total to 216, even par for three days of play. He moved up from a tie for ninth place and four shots out of the lead going into the final round.

“Competition is just as strong as last year. The course is longer and the greens are tougher than last year and putting has been a challenge,” said Carranza, who competed for CSM in the nationals in 2010.

“Playing in the national championship last year was a huge help,” said Carranza. “I learned that you have to take one shot at a time for the length of the tournament.”

Other CSM athletes in the competition are Tyler Logan of La Plata, who shot 83 for a total of 239 and is in 101st place, and Walt Wiseman of Upper Marlboro, who shot 76 for a total of 240 and is in 107th place going into the final round of competition.
