Scholarship recipients were recognized at the 10th annual scholarship award ceremony

The Greater Waldorf Jaycees and the College of Southern Maryland Foundation invested in the future of more than 41 students by awarding $101,000 in scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year. CSM Foundation/Waldorf Jaycees scholarship recipients with outstanding community service potential and the donors who make the scholarships possible were recognized during the 10th annual Scholarship Awards Reception at the Waldorf Jaycees Community Center in June.

Kevin Wedding, government liaison for the Greater Waldorf Jaycees Foundation, Suzanne Wible, community liaison of the Greater Waldorf Jaycees Foundation and CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried presented the awards, including 13 renewal scholarships.  Among those recognized was renewal scholarship recipient Michael Gargano, who received special recognition for achieving the highest grade point average. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on recommendations, academic achievement, financial need and demonstrated potential for community leadership.

The Waldorf Jaycees sponsored four scholarships and co-sponsored 24 scholarships with CSM.  Recipients of this year’s Jaycees scholarships are: Ashley Breeden who received the Gertrude Mitchell Nursing Scholarship, Mary Davis who received the Mary Matula Scholarship, Ashley White who received the James Sweatt Scholarship and Leon Drumm who received the Brian Ramsey Memorial Scholarship.

The CSM Foundation recognized the following recipients of this year’s Walter B. Grove II Memorial Scholarship: Shaun Kistler, Diane Payne, Amanda Schmeltz and Nareesa Shorter. The Foundation also recognized Jack Love Sprague Scholarship recipient Desirae Tinsley.

The Waldorf Jaycees have partnered with the CSM Foundation to provide educational opportunities for Charles County residents for 10 years.  North Point High School graduate Elizabeth Boggs, whose father is a CSM alum, is grateful for the scholarship. “This scholarship will enable me to pursue my academic goals,” said Boggs who plans to major in engineering.

The Waldorf Jaycees have been developing leaders in Charles County through community service for more than 35 years.  “Building leaders through service to strengthen Charles County is part of the mission of the Waldorf Jaycees,” said Wible.

“The Waldorf Jaycees are demonstrating again our commitment to educational opportunities for students in Charles County and the future leaders that we have right here at home,” said Wedding.
