The College of Southern Maryland has partnered with LifeStyles of Maryland Foundation by donating furniture to the organization that will be used in its efforts to shelter and feed the homeless.

“Our organization provides shelter for those members of our community who are homeless. In addition to shelter we provide meals. We also work with a number of youth in the community. The furniture obtained from the college will provide the necessary equipment to meet these needs,” said Sandy O. Washington, executive director of LifeStyles. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, LifeStyles is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the community and focused on empowering economically disadvantaged individuals and families.

“LifeStyles assists in many different walks of life on a daily basis,” said CSM’s Scheduling and Food Services Coordinator Phyllis Coombs, who coordinated the furniture donation. The furniture donation is from the CSM Café at the La Plata Campus and included eight rectangle tables with booths, approximately 10 square tables and 40 chairs to be used in the two houses maintained by LifeStyles.

Washington said that LifeStyles and the college have been partners for several years. “We have worked with CSM to recruit individuals to the allied health field. We have collaborated on business development programs. We have provided education and outreach activities at our offices as well as provided presenters for CSM activities regionally. The college has been a tremendous assistance for individuals that we come in contact with trying to get their lives back together, especially women. Through the referrals made to many of the college programs over the years, hundreds of people have been introduced to the higher education arena,” she said.

As the College of Southern Maryland celebrates its 50th anniversary, the CSM Foundation marks a major milestone in the college’s history of the college with its “Campaign for the Next 50 Years.” The campaign is raising $5 million to fund an Institute for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (ISTEM), a Regional Center for Trades and Transportation Technologies; and initiatives to address local nursing and healthcare workforce shortages; focus on educational excellence, and endow a student scholarship fund for access and success. CSM, founded in 1958, is the fifth largest community college in Maryland and grown to be the centerpiece of Southern Maryland with campuses in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties and more than 21,000 annual enrollments.
