A communication class at the College of Southern Maryland is involved in a service-learning project to help three local groups through a donation drive. The collection continues through Nov. 20 for items to benefit a food pantry, military care packages and animal welfare.

Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that combines community service with classroom instruction to strengthen communities, according to CSM Professor Michelle Simpson whose class is organizing the donation drive.

The students are excited to be a part of Service Learning. “I am passionate about helping others and learning along the way,” said CSM student Mike Hering.

“I actually have participated in a service-learning project and it was a great experience…I felt like I was making a difference,” said CSM student Christopher Brown.

The organizations which will benefit are Calvary Gospel Church in Waldorf that supports deployed soldiers by mailing care packages; Pisgah Seventh Day Adventist Church in Bryans Road that maintains a food pantry for low income families; and St. Mary's Animal Welfare League in Leonardtown, that needs food litter and treats to care for abandoned cats.

“These three groups have needs every day, but with the holidays quickly approaching, their needs are even greater,” said CSM student Barbara McShea. “The class is asking the community for help.”

Until Nov. 20, collection boxes will be located at CSM’s libraries at the La Plata, Leonardtown and Prince Frederick campuses as well as at CSM’s Waldorf Center, 3261 Old Washington Road, and CSM’s Center for Trades and Energy Training, 17 Irongate Drive, Waldorf. Additional locations are the Charles County Humane Society, 71 Industrial Park Drive, and Calvary Gospel Church, 11150 Berry Road, both in Waldorf; Pisgah Seventh Day Adventist Church, 5830 Bumpy Oak Road, Bryans Road; Burch Oil, 6796 Point Lookout Road, Leonardtown; and Pro Fitness, 23415 Three Notch Road in California.

Items needed are used ink or toner cartridges, non-perishable food, disposal razors, wet and dry cat food, cat treats, clumping cat litter, small travel or sample-sized personal care products, hard candy, and used books or magazines in good condition.
