Extreme Makeover to Transform from the Ground Up

The College of Southern Maryland held a non-traditional ground breaking ceremony for one of the college’s original structures on the La Plata Campus earlier this fall.  CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried, elected officials, alumni, faculty and students wearing safety goggles and with mallets in-hand were poised to celebrate the demolition process on the old Business (BU) Building before construction begins on a new one.

In a project that is being called an “Extreme Makeover,” the BU Building will expand from one story to a 25,000-square-foot, two-story structure and re-situate perpendicular to its present location to complement the current Administration Building. The project architect is Grimm and Parker and the general contractor is J. A. Scheibel, Inc.

Once completed, the BU Building will provide classroom and laboratory space, and office space for the college’s Financial and Administrative Services. Anticipated cost of the project is $6.67 million, with completion during spring 2012.

The BU Building was built simultaneously as the Administration Building and Continuing Education Building in 1968 to create the home of then Charles County Community College.
