The College of Southern Maryland announces its 2016-17 fine arts program, which includes art shows, theater productions for adults and children, dance performances, musical concerts and recitals, and readings by nationally known authors and poets. Added to the schedule this season is the Benny C. Morgan Recital Series at the Leonardtown Campus beginning in October and the CSM Pops Concert! in April featuring the college's Barbershop Chorus, Latin Ensemble, and Chorale and Chamber Choirs. Meggan Gould's “Traces of Vision” will kick off the fine arts season at CSM, with a show running from Sept. 6-29. There will be an artist lecture at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 27 in the La Plata Campus, Learning Resource Center, Room 102. A reception will follow. Gould is a photographer living and working in New Mexico, where she is an assistant professor of art at the University of New Mexico.
Dominic Sansone's “# the drone life” will be featured Oct. 10-Nov. 3. Gregory T. Davis' “Impermanence of Knowledge” will be shown Nov. 14- Dec. 8. Jim Arendt's “Selvage” will be from Feb. 6-March 9, followed by the Annual Juried Student Exhibition from April 10-May 5. Submissions for the student exhibition will be accepted from March 28 to April 1. The jury will select exhibition works April 5.
These shows will be at the Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery at the La Plata Campus, Fine Arts Center. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Artist lectures are usually held Tuesday afternoons and are free and open to the public.

Four productions are on tap for the fall season starting in September with Main Stage's “The Runner Stumbles.” The play by Milan Stitt is based on an actual turn-of-the-century trial for the murder of a nun in a remote parish in Michigan. Performances at the La Plata Campus will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15, 8 p.m. Sept. 9, 10 and 16, and 2 p.m. Sept. 17.

Cause Theatre will present “Benched.” The play by Allyson Currin follows three women who meet every day at the same park bench to laugh, commiserate and complain about the challenges of motherhood. This play will be performed at all three CSM campuses. Shows on the La Plata Campus at 8730 Mitchell Road will be 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22, 8 p.m. Sept. 23, and 2 p.m. Sept. 24. The Prince Frederick Campus at 115 J.W. Williams Road will host the performance at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 29. The show will be at 8 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Leonardtown Campus at 22950 Hollywood Road. This show contains some mature language and may not be suitable for all ages.
The Children's Theatre will perform “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” dramatized by Joseph Robinette. The play is a dramatization of C.S. Lewis' classic, set in the land of Narnia, recreating the magic and mystery of Aslan, the great lion, his struggle with the White Witch, and the adventures of four children who inadvertently wander from an old wardrobe into the never-to-be-forgotten Narnia. Shows on the La Plata Campus will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 7, and 2 and 7 p.m. Oct. 8.
Main Stage's “Pinocchio,” written by CSM Technical Director H. Keith Hight with music and lyrics by W.G. Pete Stokes, tells the classic tale of the wooden puppet who wanted to be a real boy. It is a brand new musical and theatrical adaptation based on the original novel by Carlo Collodi. Performances will be held at the La Plata Campus at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 and 17, 8 p.m. Nov. 11, 12 and 18, and 2 p.m. Nov. 19.
Main Stage also will present “Blood Relations” in February. The play is based on the true story of Lizzie Borden, her trial for the murders of her father and stepmother, and her eventual acquittal.
Cause Theatre will perform two plays, “The Library” and “The Amish Project,” in January and “9 Parts Desire” in March. Due to mature content and heavy subject matter, these productions may not be suitable for all audiences.
Children's Theatre also will have on tap “A Wrinkle in Time” in February and “Knuffle Bunny” in March.
Open auditions will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 and 15 in the La Plata Campus Fine Arts Center Theatre for those 8 and older for these plays: “The Library,” “The Amish Project,” “Blood Relations,” “A Wrinkle in Time” and “Knuffle Bunny.” Prepare a one-minute monologue, prepare 16 bars of a song with music for the accompanist and come dressed to move around.
Open auditions will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 23 and 24 at the La Plata Campus, Fine Arts Center Theatre for those 18 and older for “9 Parts Desire” and “Shadowlands,” which will be performed during the Renaissance Festival. Prepare a one-minute monologue.
Music
The academic year of music will include the Ward Virts Concert Series on the Prince Frederick Campus. This year's offerings include Brian Ganz on piano at 3 p.m. Oct. 9; Jacques Wieciech, countertenor, at 3 p.m. Nov. 13; Michael Adcock on piano at 3 p.m. Feb. 12; The Eric Byrd Trio, jazz, at 3 p.m. March 12; Hannah Baslee, mezzo-soprano, at 3 p.m. April 9; and Ara Gregorian on violin at 3 p.m. May 14.
New this year is the Benny C. Morgan Recital Series at the Leonardtown Campus. Morgan, who passed away in February 2016, donated a Steinway piano to the college. This new music series was created to honor the memory of this local music teacher and his generous donation.
Artists performing include The Chamber Players at 8 p.m. Oct. 15, mezzo-soprano Hannah Baslee at 8 p.m. Nov. 19, Southern Maryland Chamber Ensemble at 8 p.m. March 4 and Southern Maryland Chamber Players at 8 p.m. April 15.
The Southern Maryland Concert Band will perform at the La Plata Campus at 8 p.m. Oct. 22 and 8 p.m. May 6. Jazz Ensemble concerts will be held at 8 p.m. Dec. 3 at the La Plata Campus and at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Leonardtown Campus. The annual Jazz Festival will offer concerts at 8 p.m. March 31 and 8 p.m. April 1 at the La Plata Campus. The Latin Ensemble will perform two concerts at 8 p.m. Dec. 10 at the La Plata Campus and 7:30 p.m. May 10 at the Prince Frederick campus.
Barbershop concerts will be held at 3 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Prince Frederick Campus and 8 p.m. Dec. 2 at the La Plata Campus. The Barbershop Extravaganza will be at 3 p.m. April 8. A chorale and chamber choir concert will be at 8 p.m. Dec. 9 at the La Plata Campus and 7:30 p.m. May 4 at the Leonardtown Campus.
Student recitals at the La Plata Campus will be held at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 8 and 2:30 p.m. April 27. A first-time CSM Pops Concert! will be offered at 7 p.m. April 29 at the La Plata Campus featuring the CSM Barbershop Chorus, CSM Latin Ensemble, CSM Chorale and CSM Chamber Choir.
Renaissance Festival
The Renaissance Festival will return to the La Plata Campus April 21-23 featuring a performance of the play “Shadowlands” at 7 p.m. April 21, 2 and 7 p.m. April 22, and 3 p.m. April 23. There also will be music, demonstrations and more from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 22 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 23.
Dance
There will be dance performances at the La Plata Campus at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5 and 7:30 p.m. May 1. CSM's Dance Ensemble performs a variety of pieces to appeal to all lovers of dance. Directed by Joanne Lunsford, the dance ensemble presents two performances each year, which might include traditional ballet alongside modern styles such as hip hop, contemporary and jazz dance.
Literature
Connections Literary Series includes readings each semester with established and emerging writers as well as fall and spring publications representing submissions in poetry, short story, photography and art from students and the Southern Maryland community.
Poet Evie Shockley will read some of her work at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 on the Prince Frederick Campus. Poet Rick Benjamin will give a reading of his work at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4 on the Leonardtown Campus.
In addition to the Connections readings, the Connections Magazine is a regional literary journal published twice a year that features poems, stories, artwork and photography of Southern Maryland residents. A reading by contributors to the magazine will take place at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2 on the La Plata Campus Center for Business and Industry (BI) Building, Dr. John M. Sine Conference Room 103/104 at 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata. The event is free. Another reading will be held May 5. To be considered for fall 2016's issue, the deadline for submissions is Oct. 31.
Connections readings are also set at 7:30 p.m. March 3 with novelist Sunil Yapa and at 7:30 p.m. April 7 with poet Frank X. Walker.
