College of Southern Maryland Assistant Professor Denise Gilmer-Knudson, left, congratulates Communication Day Public Speaking Competition winner ALisa Casas, of California, for “The Impact of Facebook on our Youth,” March 29 at the La Plata Campus. In its second year, Communication Day offers area high school students and CSM students an opportunity to explore careers in television news, public relations, journalism, education and digital media production.

CSM’s Communication Day keynote speaker was ABC-7 News Reporter Roz Plater, a native of Calvert County, who told area high school students that this is a great time to get into the communication field. She encouraged students to read everything they could get their hands on; to learn about backpack journalism technology such as photography, shooting and editing video, and building and managing a website; to stay current on social media trends and work on mobile platforms such as smartphones; and to study a second language. “Never stop learning. In this industry it is important to keep your skills fresh,” Plater said.
