Student Art Submission Deadline March 24, Show Opens March 28
From concept to completed work, many artists dont know how their pieces will be received or even if they will find an appreciative audience. For students at the College of Southern Maryland, the Annual Juried Student Art Show opening March 28 will answer some of those questions.
This is an opportunity for our students to experience the process of applying for a juried exhibition. This type of exhibition is an important component of being a working artist and it is also an opportunity for students to have their work evaluated by an outside juror, said CSM Assistant Professor Katherine Sifers, the shows coordinator as well as curator for CSM gallery exhibits.
It was a great surprise to be chosen as the first-place winner, said Alan Frampton of his 2013 winning stoneware piece Twisted Form. Getting the award did give me encouragement to continue in ceramics, especially since I won with what I would call an unconventional piece. I've tried to be more experimental in design and techniques.
Any currently enrolled CSM student with work produced in a CSM art course is eligible for the show and can submit up to six pieces produced within the past two years. Pieces must be submitted by 5 p.m. on March 24. All students who are selected for the show will have the opportunity to have their work considered for inclusion in a CSM Student exhibition at the CalvART Gallery in Prince Frederick during June.
CSMs student art show, on exhibit through May 2 at the Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Center of the La Plata Campus, will include a Gallery Talk, awards presentation and reception at noon on April 15.
Students will be awarded top honors in three categories: drawing/painting, photography/new media and ceramics. A total of $1,000 in prize money will be awarded. CSM faculty members will select the exhibition work from the submissions, with the winners selected by an outside juror. Additionally, the Fine Arts Department will select one piece to be hung in the Walter Grove Memorial Art Gallery or displayed in another campus location.
The 2013 second-place prize went to Barbara Hance for her digital photograph Shadows on the Bay and the third-place prize went to Laura Kasko for her gouache on paper Admixture Study. The faculty selected and purchased Ashley Saldanas cyanotype, Tree line, to add to the colleges permanent collection.
The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday.
