Free Peer Tutoring is Available at All CSM Campuses
Seven College of Southern Maryland (CSM) peer tutors completed basic, intermediate and advanced tutoring training over the summer in order to further assist CSM students requiring help in their fields of study. The seven peer – or student – tutors join three other advanced tutors at CSM who have achieved National Tutoring Association Certifications.
The advanced tutors are available to provide face-to-face, free help to all currently enrolled students. The CSM Learning Centers provides tutoring at all of the CSM campuses, including the Waldorf Center. There are close to 40 peer and professional tutors on staff who are available for group tutoring throughout the day and evenings at designated tutoring rooms.
“We don’t want any student to ever feel overwhelmed by any class demands that are being placed on them,” explained Lead Learning Support Services Program’s Coordinator Laurie Cangelosi. “Our tutors don’t teach – that is what the instructors do. Instead, they are here to help students understand concepts and review skills. It is pretty neat,” she added, “to walk by a tutoring room and see the tutors working through examples of math problems on the white board, or sitting around the table with students talking through theories. They are very engaged.”
Cangelosi said that students are encouraged to come to the tutoring rooms early in the semester.
“It is easier on everyone if students start off on a good pace, instead of trying to catch up when the course gets more challenging later on during the semester. In fact, all students are encouraged to do their homework in the tutoring room. That way, if they have a question there is someone right there to help them.”
Tutoring is offered in a variety of subjects including English, math and biology. The tutoring on campus is walk-in, no appointment necessary. The Learning Centers are located at the La Plata Campus in the Library, Room 118; at the Leonardtown Campus in Building B, Room 111; and at the Prince Frederick Campus in Building A, Room 125 and various locations at the Regional Hughesville Campus and the Waldorf Center.
In addition to face-to-face tutoring, online tutoring services are available around the clock to currently enrolled credit CSM students in the areas of math, writing, English as second language, accounting, economics and chemistry.
