Exhibit to feature work of Yikui Gu, Colleen Rudolph, Pete Zebley, Jan. 17-March 14
The College of Southern Maryland will display the collected works of three diverse but connected artists in the upcoming exhibition, Dystopias, opening Jan. 17 in the Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Center of the La Plata Campus. Curated by CSM Assistant Professor of Art Yikui Gu, the exhibition will remain open until March 14. Featured artist Colleen Rudolph will host a free gallery talk about certain technical aspects of the exhibit and her work in particular at noon on Feb. 4 in the gallery.
Dystopias artists will include sculptor and installation artist Rudolph , mixed-media artist Pete Zebley and Gu, who is primarily a painter. All artists reside in Philadelphia. Our works all have a connection to art history, while also informed by the postmodern experience, said Gu.
According to Gu, the works exhibited will link classical media with modern technology, technique and inspiration. My own work in traditional painting mediums gains its imagery largely from the internet, appropriated from mass media, said Gu. Rudolphs sculptures, cast in bronze or plaster like those of the Greeks thousands of years ago, are connected to motion sensors, creating an interactive experience for the viewer. Zebleys works are a mix of traditional media such as oil and acrylic, but layered with modern techniques like screen printing and synthetic polymers. It is this mix of the old and new that creates, for some, a dystopia, though it is all really just a matter of perspective.
As artists, we have inherited a world without clearly defined hierarchies, artistic movements or prevailing trends, said Gu on CSM Arts website. Without the need to adhere to particular schools of thought, we have been liberated to process the experiences around us, and synthesize that with our own inner experiences. This has resulted in a fragmented view of the world, creating and highlighting the dysfunctions both without and within. We have created our own perfect little dystopias.
