Merging the Traditional with the Digital: Chris Kienke’s Latest Work on Display at CSM

The latest works of painter Chris Kienke will be on display in the College of Southern Maryland’s Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery located in the Fine Arts Center on the La Plata Campus between Sept. 6 and Oct. 4. A visit and gallery talk from the artist will take place at noon on Sept. 24.  The gallery talk is open to the public.

His current explorations in the studio revolve around a hybrid practice of painting and digital imagery. He is interested in creating images that make it difficult for the viewer to decipher the archeology between the painted layers and the printed image.

Kienke’s work has been exhibited in more than 50 shows, with his most recent solo debut in New York City at the Bowery Gallery in June 2011. He exhibited in the Florence Biennale in December 2011 and was included in New American Paintings in September 2009. Kienke has been a fellow at the Vermont Studio Center in 2003 and 2007. His work is in permanent collections such as ABN Amro Bank in Dubai, Savannah College of Art and Design and the Hospitalfield Trust in Scotland. Kienke’s studio work is diverse, ranging from paintings and drawings to videos to installations.

Kienke’s approach is that of an inquisitive mind observing, evaluating, experimenting and exploring moments and events. His current works reference a range of topics from colonization and slavery to globalization and televisual imagery.

Kienke received his Masters in Fine Arts from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale in 2000 and his Bachelor’s from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1994. He lives and works in Savannah, Ga.

The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday. For information, visit www.csmd.edu/Arts.
