
The College of Southern Maryland will celebrate its 55th spring commencement at the La Plata Campus on May 15 with the keynote address to be provided by MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital President and Senior Vice President of MedStar Health Michael J. Chiaramonte.
Chiaramonte was appointed president of MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center, a 300-bed, full-service general hospital in 2007. He oversees all strategic and tactical operations of the hospital including planning and development, patient safety, physical plant operations and medical staff administration.
From 1996 to 2007, Chiaramonte served as founder and president of Southern Maryland Healthcare System, an integrated system providing patient services beyond hospitalization to include primary care, long-term care, home nursing care, physical rehabilitation and other related healthcare support services. He has served in various positions for the hospital since 1984.
Chiaramonte earned a masters in business administration with honors from The George Washington University and graduated Cum Laude with a bachelors degree in management/marketing and a minor in economics from James Madison University. He received a certificate in Implementing Strategy from the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.
Chiaramonte serves on the Maryland Health Quality Councils Health Disparities Workgroup and previously served on the Governors Task Force on Medical Malpractice and Health Care Access. He is a member of the executive committee of the Maryland Hospital Association and a founding member and former chairman of the Greater Prince Georges Business Roundtable. Chiaramonte serves in the leadership of the Prince Georges Board of Trade and on the boards of MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital and its related organizations, and St. Stephens and St. Agnes School.
The Chiaramonte family gave CSM the largest cash gift in the college's history which has helped enhance the nursing program through healthcare simulation labs and state-of-the-art training equipment. The Chiaramonte Hope Scholarship Fund has provided scholarships to more than 140 students studying in healthcare and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields who have experienced hardship.
CSMs spring commencement activities will begin with an Honors Convocation at 6 p.m. on May 14 on the Administration (AD) lawn. A nurses recognition program begins at 1 p.m., May 15 in the Physical Education (PE) Building, with a reception immediately following on the upper level. The colleges commencement ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. May 15 on the AD lawn. A reception will follow the ceremony in the Center for Business and Industry (BI) Building, Chaney Enterprises Conference Room, BI-113. Rain location for Honors Convocation and Commencement is the PE Building and tickets are required. Students have been provided tickets for guests to use in the event of inclement weather.
The safety of CSM students, guests and employees is of utmost importance. CSM will be conducting a bag check at the spring commencement, and all individuals may be subject to a bag check before entry. CSM Public Safety officials encourage guests to leave large secondary bags, diaper bags and backpacks in their vehicles or at home as these will be subject to the bag check process.
