CSM Paints, Tugs during Leonardtown’s Annual Beach Party on the Square, Aug. 6

Window-painting hosted by the College of Southern Maryland will be among featured activities at Leonardtown’s Beach Party on the Square, 4-9 p.m., Aug. 6 on the Leonardtown Square, Leonardtown. This activity is part of the Leonardtown Business Association and the Commissioners of Leonardtown annual Beach Party which includes live entertainment, kayaking at the wharf, magic shows, hula dancing, jump rope, limbo contests, strolling balloon artists and dance performances. Additional activities for children include an inflatable rock climbing wall, Velcro sticky wall, moonbounce, water slide, sand art, face painting and a fire truck hose down.

Staff members from CSM’s Wellness Fitness and Recreation department will direct a game of tug of war at 5 p.m. and fitness games at 6 p.m. located in the sandy court, for participants. Additionally, CSM volunteers will be assisting artists, young and old, to paint a storefront window at Washington Street, beginning at 4 p.m.

This year the Beach Party has partnered with the Rotary Clubs of Leonardtown and Lexington Park to introduce the “Running of the Ball,” a parody of the famous “Running of the Bulls” in Spain. This fundraising activity will occur on Fenwick Street beginning at 7 p.m. Pre-numbered golf balls are available for purchase and will be released on Fenwick Street hill. The first 30 balls to enter the chute will receive monetary prizes. Golf balls are $5 each and proceeds will support local charities.

Downtown shops and restaurants will be open for business selling a variety of items and offering food. Additional refreshments and crafts will be available to purchase from local vendors throughout the square.

Traffic will be diverted beginning at noon at the intersection of Washington and Shadrick streets. Free parking will be located at areas on the square along with additional parking located at the CSM Leonardtown Campus. Free roundtrip shuttle service provided by the St. Mary’s Transit System buses will be available to those who park in CSM’s parking lot.

The Beach Party is made possible in part by a partnership with CSM as well as the Leonardtown Business Association, The Commissioners of Leonardtown, Quality Built Homes, Inc., Winegardner Automotive Group, Loiederman Soltesz Associates, Inc., Cedar Point Federal Credit Union, Maryland State Arts Council and the St. Mary’s Arts Council.
