The workshop will introduce some lesser known history makers in the black community. CSM Diversity and Equal Opportunity Office: Black History Month High School Essay Contest. Entries due by Feb. 29, College of Southern Maryland, La Plata Campus, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata. Open to tri-county area high school juniors and seniors, participants are asked to write an original essay. Three winners will be selected by CSM’s social sciences, human services and teacher education division panelists and will be awarded a $500 performance award toward attendance at CSM. Free to enter. CSM’s Admissions Department Presents: The African American Heritage of Southern Maryland. 6-8 p.m., Feb. 9, College of Southern Maryland, Prince Frederick Campus, Room 119, 115 J.W. Join the tri-county black history month celebration co-presented by The African American Heritage Society of Charles County, The Calvert County Historical Society, The Calvert County Minority Business Alliance, The Calvert County NAACP, The Concerned Black Women of Calvert County, and The Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions of St. Mary’s County. Meet local historians, authors and genealogists and learn more about the heritage and contributions of African Americans to the tri-county region.
