CSM’s Fourth Annual Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference

Attendees Chose from 39 Workshops on Promoting Student Success

            The College of Southern Maryland’s Fourth Annual Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference brought more than 200 educators and administrators from 26 institutions from as far away as Jefferson, Ohio, and Virginia Beach to take part in a day of workshops on promoting student success. Workshop topics included community learning, online learning and tutoring, interactive learning, international education, nursing simulation labs and using social media in coursework. The conference included a keynote speech by Cole W. Camplese, director, Education Technology Services, The Pennsylvania State University. Camplese oversees university-wide initiatives focusing on teaching and learning with technology. His primary area of focus is the appropriate integration of emerging technologies such as blogs and podcasts into learning spaces.

            CSM will host a conference, “Effective Teaching of STEM” (science, technology, engineering and math) March 11, 2011 with Dr. Craig Nelson of Indiana University and Dr. Bob Grossman of Kalamazoo College as keynote speakers. They will also lead a workshop, “Increasing the Retention of Under-Represented Groups—and the Learning of All Groups—In STEM Courses.” Presentations will include effective use of games in the STEM classroom and authentic learning activity sessions.
