The College of Southern Marylands Sixth Annual Student Success Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference will include a keynote address on Improving Diverse Student Outcomes in STEM Classrooms: Addressing the Missing Link by Claudia Morrell, chief operations officer for the National Alliance for Partnership and Equity (NAPE), on April 19 at the colleges La Plata Campus.
Prior to joining NAPE, Morrell was founder and CEO for the Multinational Development of Women in Technology, founded in 2007, and recipient of a Governors citation in 2008. She served as executive director of the Center for Women and Technology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County for seven years, working to build the center to an internationally recognized organization. Morrell works to create and direct efforts that advance women and girls in nontraditional fields. She has a bachelors degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and masters degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and Loyola College in Maryland.
The regional conference is a day-long conference for educators providing effective teaching tips from state and national experts in a variety of areas, including STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), along with opportunities for faculty and administrators to present ideas and to interact with peers from other institutions. Conference tracks include teaching approaches and strategies, student preparedness, general interest, technology and effective teaching of STEM.
In addition to Morrell, participants will hear from Anne Arundel Countys North County High School Principal Dr. William Heiser and his student, Jack Andraka, who at the age of 15 received a patent and $75,000 Intel Science Fair scholarship for a device for early detection of pancreatic cancer.
