‘The Drowsy Chaperone’ Brings Back Jazz

CSM Production Combines Music, Comedy, Mischief

The College of Southern Maryland Theatre Department presents “The Drowsy Chaperone,” a musical comedy which pays tribute to the Jazz-age shows of the 1920s. The performance will open at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 6 with additional performances at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 13, and 8 p.m., Nov. 7-8 and 14-15. All performances will take place on the La Plata Campus in the Fine Arts (FA) Center, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata.

“The Drowsy Chaperone,” written by Bob Martin and Don McKeller with music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, is a parody of American musical comedies of the 1920s. In the play, a man puts on his favorite record, the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and “The Drowsy Chaperone” begins as the man watches. The play follows an assortment of eccentric characters throughout their night: two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theater producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone.

Casting includes, from Waldorf, Matt Jameson as “Man in Chair,” Jhonni Jones as Drowsy, Christian Stewart as Robert and cast members Keion Farrar, Kahlil Feeling, Jaimie Green, Mamaya Opoku and Kheni Wells; from Bryans Road, Devorah Henry as Tottendale and cast members Amanda Connelly and Maecy Robertson; from Mechanicsville, Jamie Burroughs as Janet, and cast member Frank Bowles; from La Plata, cast members Alex LaClair and Bob White; and JR Cook of Hollywood, Robert Hamilton of Marbury, Anthony Montgomery of Pomfret and Amber Peterson of Indian Head.

“The Drowsy Chaperone” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). Tickets for all shows are $15 for adults and $12 for military/seniors/youth.
