‘Baltimore Belle, Hetty Cary’ Presentation, March 12, Celebrates Women’s History Month

Presentation Celebrates Women’s History Month

The Southern Maryland Civil War Roundtable (SMCWR) joins in the celebration of Women’s History Month with a presentation by Georgia Ladd on “Baltimore Belle, Hetty Cary” for its March meeting. The presentation will be at 7 p.m., March 12 at CSM’s Center for Business and Industry (BI), Chaney Enterprises Conference Room BI-113, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata.

Hetty Carr Cary was a supporter of the South and smuggled supplies through the Union blockade to Confederate states via Southern Maryland. She was the wife of Confederate General John Pegram who died during the Battle of Hatcher’s Run just weeks after their wedding day. Later in her life, Cary would marry pioneering physiologist H. Newell Martin.

Ladd is a member of the Chesapeake Civil War Round Table and the Maryland Historical Society’s Teacher Advisory Council and serves as a teacher representative for the Civil War Preservation Trust. She is active in the Maryland Council for Social Studies and the Middle States Conference for Social Studies and has presented at social studies conferences throughout the eastern region of the United States.

Ladd’s passion for researching local history began with a family genealogy project where she discovered that her entire research could be accomplished by visiting four counties in Maryland; Howard, Anne Arundel, Calvert and St. Mary’s. She continues to support these historical societies by offering her assistance as a researcher. She is drawn to topics of social history, particularly those that focus on women.

The Southern Maryland Civil War Roundtable hosts monthly meetings, the second Tuesday of every month from September through May. Meetings are free and open to the public, but membership to the roundtable is highly encouraged. Annual membership is $30. For information, contact SMCWR President Dr. Brad Gottfried at bgottfried@csmd.edu or 301-934-7625.
