Recalling an Intimate, Personal Experience:

Gallery Talk With Ching Ching Cheng, Oct. 10

The College of Southern Maryland will host a gallery talk with visiting artist Ching Ching Cheng at noon on Oct. 10 in the Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Center of the La Plata Campus. Cheng will discuss her latest exhibition, “Transverse,” on display at CSM between Oct. 10 through Nov. 15. This talk is open to the public.

Born in Taiwan and residing in Altadena, Calif., Ching Ching Cheng works to inject her art with personal experience, encouraging viewers to recall their own. She writes on her website, “My work is symbolic and conceptual. I present matter outside the self from this psychological position. I am constantly trying to replace the figures in my paintings with images that represent the idea of the figure, an object or an animal that takes on the persona of what the figure represents. This intimate gesture allows for a personal connection to be forged by the viewer with the work.”

Cheng works in several mediums including digital and three-dimensional as well as more traditional mediums such as painting and drawing. She has won commendations from the Art Center College of Design, ArtScene Today and numerous juried competitions in the U.S. and abroad.

Cheng brings together several distinct bodies of work in “Transverse.” Her fascination with the relationship between memory and images, cognition and machines finds its way into an exhibition with works ranging from installation and project-based art, to works on paper and small-scale sculpture. The selection of works reveals Cheng’s range of interests and commitments as an artist.

Cheng continues on her website, “Ultimately, there is no definitive subject, but only a meditation on personal experience and emotion. The subject matter that influences and inspires my work the most comes from psychology and nature.”

Cheng’s exhibit will be displayed from Oct. 11 through Nov. 15. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday. For information, visit To learn more about the artist, visit
