The College of Southern Marylands mathematics, physics and engineering division is accepting entries for its Women & Math Essay Contest. Deadline to submit materials is April 9.
To promote the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), the college is sponsoring the essay contest to encourage young women to enter these fields. Winning essayists will be announced at the Women & Math Reception and Tea. Awards valued up to $250 will be presented.
Participants are asked to interview a woman currently working in a STEM career field and write an original essay in narrative form about her and her job. The essay should be approximately 500 to 800 words and not exceed 1,000 words.
The goal of the essay contest is to get young girls to interact with professional women in the STEM fields, in order to learn about the challenges and how to pursue careers in those related fields, said Sandra Poinsett, CSM professor of mathematics.
Essays must be typed, double-spaced and free of grammatical and syntax errors. The author should include her name on each page and also include a brief autobiographical statement and her career goals. The entry form can be downloaded from www.csmd.edu/women&math/essay/index.htm.
